1979 Volkswagen Beetle

🌊 River Blue Metallic Final Year Cabriolet Classic

$13,700

Plus Taxes & Licensing

This 1979 Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet is a fine, low-mileage example of the iconic ‘people’s car’, dating from the final year of open-top Beetle production.
It is powered by a rear-mounted 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four producing up to 50hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
The five-figure odometer shows 64,888 miles, which is believed to be correct, however this cannot be warranted.
Delivered new to the US, this left-hand drive example is now located in Munich.
This vehicle has had three owners from new, and has been in the current collection for 10 years.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

This Beetle is finished in the appealing hue of River Blue metallic with a black vinyl convertible roof, over a black vinyl-trimmed interior with burr walnut veneer on the dashboard.
It rides on a set of 14-inch steel wheels, shod in matching Continental Contact tyres.
The factory specification includes a four-spoke steering wheel, a VDO analogue clock, push-out front quarter light windows, a basic heater and ventilation system, a heated rear screen, manually operated windows, a cigarette lighter, and rear ashtrays.
A retro-look Caliber head unit has been fitted in the cabin, which features CD and FM radio as well as Bluetooth, USB and SD card connectivity and music streaming.
The car comes with its original operating instructions, a copy of its historic US title, and a selection of invoices dating back to 2013 when it was acquired for the current collection.

CONDITION

As can be seen in the photo gallery, the undercarriage is rust-free and is completely original.
The River Blue metallic paintwork is in excellent condition, having been repainted earlier in the car’s lifetime. The car’s cavities have been protected to preserve the paintwork, though there are a couple of areas of bubbling where the offside rear wing meets the bodywork, the odd front-end stone chip and a few chips on the fronts of the rear wheel arches.
The soft-top roof appears in good order, with no apparent rips or tears and a clear rear window.
Inside, the reupholstered vinyl-trimmed interior shows very little in the way of wear, the carpets are protected by rubber mats which are in good order, and there appears to be little UV fading. The driver controls all present in good order, as do the attractive burr walnut dashboard inserts.
There are no known electrical or mechanical faults, and there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
The car’s last inspection of roadworthiness was conducted in October 2022, during which no warnings or advisory items were noted.

SERVICE HISTORY

This Beetle’s latest service was carried out in March 2021 at an indicated 60,000 miles by classic Volkswagen specialist Käferwerkstatt. The work comprised of an engine oil and filter change, along with the replacement of the cam belt and brake fluid, as well as a general inspection of the car.
The battery and the tyres were replaced during the current ownership period, and the starter motor was removed, overhauled, and reinstalled.
When the car was acquired 10 years ago, extensive professional cavity sealing was carried out to protect the paintwork, which was resprayed by the previous owner.

SUMMARY
This Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet is a fine example of the charming open-top classic, which has benefitted from an interior retrim and a repaint during its lifetime. It’s in authentic condition and largely free of corrosion, ready to drive and offers a pleasant way to travel on sunny days. This Beetle is a fine addition to any classic collection.
